I have written several times about the Relative Strangers research that was carried out by Carol Smart and Petra Nordqvist at the University of Manchester. It is some of the most insightful and interesting research about donor conception families I have ever come across and made accessible in a way that most academic work is not through the writing of a book (of the same name) and now four leaflets. Attractive, well written, designed and illustrated these leaflets bring what they call an ‘easy digest’ of material from the interviews they conducted with heterosexual and lesbian couples and grandparents to both types of family. They will be of help and interest to recipient couples, wider family and indeed anyone who has the well-being of donor conception families at heart.
Why can’t all academics and universities understand that their work is of little use to anyone in journals that are mostly hidden behind restrictive paywalls, only accessible to other academics who can quote them in their own papers that are equally hidden away from public view.
